Lt. E.W. Hewitt. Photo taken c.1885. Hewitt is wearing a suit and tie. Inscription on the photo, apparently written by Hewitt, refers to Civil War service with 9th Vermont regiment. Inscription follows. Front of photo: "Respectfully, Lt. E.W. Hewitt, 9th Vermont. Sept. 1862, York Hospital." Back of photo: "To the Noble Union Girl, Miss Annie Jackson, now Mrs. J.L. Russ [sic]. From the Union Soldier Boy you fed when sick and a prisoner in York Hospital. Sept. 1862 Winchester, Va."

C. Frederick Barr (1870-1945) as a boy of 16 on a pennyfarthing bicycle. Date estimated as c. 1886. He was Winchester's leading photographer and an outstanding citizen for 57 years. (Ironically, this appears to be the only individual photograph OF Mr. Barr currently in the Library Archives.) Mounted on heavy cardboard.
